Bat crap crazy

May 19, 2013

Hi you.

How’s life?

Me? Mine’s good. Just a little battier than normal.

About a month ago, I was sitting in one of my go-to blogging spots around the house (I have two – on a living room chair when the kids are asleep and in my bed, with the door closed, when the kids and living room TV are attempting to one-up each other in the noise department).

I was in the former when I heard the faint sound of fluttering wings. I thought it might be some birds making a nest on the backside of our house. After all, it is spring and isn’t that the normal time birds build nests?

Only it dawned on me that it was 11 o’clock at night. Aren’t birds supposed to be sleeping by then?

A shudder ran up my spine when I realized the sound was not coming from the outside, but instead was happening in the ceiling pretty much right above my head.

We’re the first owners of our house and I think it’s only 6 or 7 years old. Don’t uninvited pests normally target older houses to creep into?

Well, last week, (one of) my worst nightmares came true via this text exchange between my husband and me.

Ryan likes to see me squirm.

Ryan likes to see me squirm.

The reality: We have bats in our attic. I’m not sure how many, but if I was a gambling woman, I’d bet a half dozen to 10. Another reality: My husband thinks he’s hilarious.

So the plan of attack is that we’ve hired a company called Critter Control to evict the bats next week. We have to pay a ton of money to guarantee they don’t come back. If the choice is paying through the nose to make sure I don’t have bats crashing in my ceiling or going up to investigate the situation myself, it’s a no-brainer.

Make fun of me for being a wuss. I’m not bat crap crazy.

We chose the location of our home when our boys were very young, mainly due to the beautiful open space that is accessible from our back yard. It’s a natural playground with walking trails, a creek, bridges, mature trees, and lots of land.

Unbeknownst to me until this year, it’s also a pretty stellar place for bats to hang out too.

Bats have plenty of space to chill here. They need to get out of my attic and pronto.

Let me live on the top of my mountain for just one post. Basking in the sunlight of the “post-race high.”

I completed a Half Marathon yesterday. It was my third time running 13.1 miles. And I completed this feat three consecutive years.

Boo ya, baby.

Back when I created my my LinkedIn profile a little over year ago, it looked a little weird to have Running listed as one of my skills. According to everything I read about LinkedIn, the tool is supposed to be an online resumé of sorts, allowing people to catch a glimpse of your professional career – a snapshot of what you’ve accomplished.

Naturally then, when it came time to list those things I felt I excelled at, I thought Running should be included in my repertoire even though it was a personal versus professional endeavor.

Every runner (or weight lifter, or cyclist, or swimmer) finds a way to stick with their routine through the good and the bad and discovers new ways to mix it up to avoid pain, boredom, and burn out.

I’d be willing to bet the majority of 9-to-5’ers I know working in corporate America run the risk of suffering those same consequences.

Again, this could just be my endurance euphoria speaking, but I have better clarity today for having set and surpassed a goal.

Knowing that I had in it me to follow through on a commitment I made to myself months ago feels amazeballs (thanks to my cousin, Jen, for that phrase).

And it proves I will work hard. In my family. In my workplace. In life.

The results of sacrifice, when you can truly step back and appreciate them, will always overshadow temporary pain.

Oh, and I’ve already re-absorbed more calories than I burned in the past 24 hours, and I wish I could say they were all from fruits and veggies, but…come on…you know me better than that. Here’s to killer burgers and pancakes!

Hey.

I’m still here.

I feel like I’m establishing a semi-permanent residence in crazy town these days. But I escaped long enough to explain why I’m writing tonight.

1. To thank anyone and everyone who continues to follow me despite the fact there are millions of bloggers out there.

2. To show appreciation for the bloggers who have influenced me. When I’m too tired to clear my own head, I still make time to peek into yours. To see a list of people I read, look at the bottom of my website.

3. Because this part of me doesn’t need to be perfect. That’s the joy of creating your own small star in cyberspace.

4. Because I needed to acknowledge that this video inspired me. No one said being a mom would be easy.

5. Because this $hit needed to be shared. No one said letting your kids develop at their own pace would be easy.

6. To beg you to cheer me on this Sunday as I conquer Lincoln’s half marathon.

7. Because I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, yet I trust that it will all work out the way it’s supposed to.

8. To confess, yet again, you are all my online therapists. Thanks for another great session.
