I need some M&Ms…stat

October 3, 2013

I’m not referring to the chocolate kind. I’ve been inhaling handfuls of those for as long as I can remember.

No, the M&Ms I’m referring to are those precious delicacies I had years ago that have since escaped me. The ones I so desperately want back. I’m talking Motivation and Metabolism (heck, you might as well toss Muscle Mass into that equation too).

It’s amazing how visual reminders can haunt you. My normal running route takes me past this road marker. It just so happens that the mere sight of this sign motivates me to keep on moving. I’ll let you read between the lines to understand its significance. (Here’s clue: I’d like the number on it to be about 10 digits lower.)

My Metabolism allowed me to live by the theory “It all cancels out” for the first 25ish years of my life. I would eat whatever my heart desired and then do enough cardio work to burn off the calories I’d consumed.

It’s hard for me to accept that my Metabolism has slowed down as I’ve aged due to a steady decrease in my overall lean body mass. (Don’t I sound like a fitness pro? Thanks Google.)

I want cheeseburgers, french fries, and fountain pop on demand, dangit! I’ll be more than willing to sweat off the pounds after my glutinous rampage.

Oh wait, I CAN’T DO THAT ANYMORE?!

It’s been said that, if a person wants to lose weight or tone up, nutrition is 80 percent of the battle – while exercise is 20 percent.

No amount of whining by me will reverse this reality.

I need to continue to make small adjustments to my eating habits if I want to raise my energy level, be a good role model to my family, and have my clothes fit more comfortably.

WHATEVER! I’m getting grouchy just thinking about the sacrifices I need to make to live an overall healthier life.

So I guess I’ll go play volleyball…to make up for the bowl and a half of lasagna I downed tonight.

Being nice does pay off

Let’s start off by stating some obvious facts:

  • In terms of guilty pleasures, I am hard pressed to name anything that tastes better than a Goodrich malt. (If you’re not blessed to live in one of the Midwestern states where Goodrich operates, I seriously feel bad for you because you are missing out on an experience that feels like driving with the top down, playing hooky, and skydiving all rolled into one.)
  • If someone placed a free Goodrich malt on the opposite side from where I stood across a six-lane freeway during rush hour traffic and told me I could have it if I made it to the prize unscathed like a human Frogger, I would take on that challenge without a second thought.
  • Goodrich malts have the consistency of wet cement, making them impossible to drink fast enough to suffer a brain freeze. They are a bit pricey for the portion size so you learn to savor every last sip.
  • Goodrich and Subway made a business decision to combine forces years ago, which resulted in them sharing store space and staff. It’s much easier and less messy for a typical worker to make a quick sandwich over a slow churned malt.

Knowing all of this upfront helps set the scene for my story.

I was on my way back into town after working at an event in a city that’s 2.5 hours from my home. My sole goal was to coast the last 15-20 miles because I didn’t want to have to stop for gas and I knew my tank was getting low, but the caution light came on to let me know my luck had run out.

I pulled into a gas station that’s connected to a Goodrich/Subway store and thought to myself, “Screw it. I need a malt.”

9:35 PM people. The best time of day to consume a gazillion calories. But, remember, I am a human Frogger when it comes to my obsession with the end prize.

So, I walked in and made eye contact with the kid who got stuck working the late shift. He asked if he could make me a sandwich and I responded with the five words I know every Goodrich/Subway worker hates.

“I’d actually like a malt.”

Not only did I want a malt, I wanted a chocolate one with marshmallow added. HIGH MAINTENANCE HEIDI.

After my demands left my lips, I started to apologize like I was breaking up with him.

“I’m sorry. I know malts totally suck to make. But I need one so badly.”

We shared some laughs over the next several minutes as he affirmed they are a total pain to make and that people who request butterscotch malts or caramel to be added to their malts are the absolute worst. He also said they’d be 10 times easier to make if they had the right supplies – including those slick dome-shaped lids with the bigger openings on top like gas stations use for their slushies. I agreed with all his points and told him he should contact the big-wigs at Goodrich and share that idea with them. “Who knows?” I said, “You may end up with some big bonus for your brilliant idea.”

As he approached the cash register he said to me, “Well, you’re cool. How about $0.54?”

That same malt should have cost me around $4. Needless to say, he and I were no longer broken up. He was back in my heart to stay.

My life theory is – be nice without expecting anything in return. When your niceness pays off, it’s like having extra marshmallow unexpectedly added to your chocolate malt.

Maternalmedia just celebrated its one-year anniversary on February 19. Back when I began this blogging site, I touted it as “only therapy for those who are easily distracted and overly committed,” because that basically sums me up in a nutshell.

I believe the overall purpose still rings true today. I also think this site has evolved into something a little more – a place where you can hopefully feel a bit uplifted or inspired to take action.

I tend to get inspired by people when I need it the most.

One such person is someone I met in high school and continue to follow because her story is incredible. She recently launched a Facebook brand page called Grown Up Spinach. It’s all about how she is attempting to model her family’s eating habits after her own personal (amazing) clean eating and weight loss journey.

One of the first articles she shared on her page was Coca Cola’s Low Calorie Beverages Will Kill You Before They Solve Obesity by the Food Babe. As a Coca Cola junkie myself, I have felt firsthand “The stimulation you get from the caffeine, along with the taste of something sweet,” and how it “keeps you coming back for more and more.”

I now know the sugary, fizzy crap is absolutely awful for me, but I bought into the multi-billion dollar industry’s “Happiness” ploy and taste long before I was old enough to realize I was ruining my health sip by sip.

Another person has taken her love of healthy eating, alongside the love of her husband, and created a company called Completely Nourished. The pair recently announced their decision to live in an RV and sell many of their household possessions…even the house itself eventually…to travel wherever their hearts lead them.

If you have 10 minutes to spare, here’s a great video of Christy explaining how she and her husband were once completely clueless about what they were putting into their bodies, and how they’ve done a total 180 and adopted additive-free eating.

My challenge is taking what I find inspiring and applying it to my life. I know what’s best for me, yet I have a tendency to slip back into old habits.

I made a conscious decision that, for one month straight beginning today, I will complete at least two tasks I do not want to do and one gratifying accomplishment I yearn to do every day.

My two crappy tasks today were:

  1. I did not drink a single coke.
  2. I pre-cooked lunches for myself so I wouldn’t eat out for at least four days this week.

My one fantastic accomplishment today was:

  1. A two-mile walk around my neighborhood.

I’ve learned that I’m better at following through with goals when I make them public. If anyone else wants to participate on this month-long journey with me, I guess I’ve always felt that misery enjoys company (Have I mentioned how much I’ll miss coke? Let me clarify…the drink!)
